This programme gives students the opportunity to gain experience in making an application and taking part in a practice interview. The interviews are carried out by volunteers from local companies, either in school or at Positive Steps/ Connexions. The process enables students to experience first hand, the types of questions they may be asked at an interview for employment or training. Interviews normally take place in the Autumn or Spring Terms in Year 11 or Summer Term Year 10.
The first stage in the process is for students to complete a mock interview application form. This gives them the opportunity to think about skills, abilities, interests and achievements and present this as if they were making a real application. This would normally be done in school as part of the careers education/ work related learning programme. The next stage is the interview itself. Interviewers use the information provided on the application form and students are encouraged to bring their Progress File along with them. The interview normally lasts about 30 minutes, with time allowed for feedback. The final stage is the debriefing and follow up, where students are encouraged to reflect on their experience to help them with future applications. Again this would normally take place in school as part of the careers/ work related learning programme.
Your involvement You can commit to as much time as you wish. This could be anything from ½ day to several days over a longer period. You would carry out practice interviews with pupils either in school or at Positive Steps Oldham, using the application forms that pupils have completed in school.
We will make all the interview arrangements and if you are getting involved for the first time a briefing session is organised for you.
